Innovation in healthcare often begins with a simple question: Can we do this better?
For Dr. Tommy Rhee, that question has guided every stage of his career—from serving as a U.S. Navy aviator to treating elite athletes, delivering a TEDx Talk, authoring a book on regenerative medicine, and founding a biotechnology company focused on the next generation of non-invasive healing.
Today, as the Founder and CEO of RheeGen®, Dr. Rhee is helping reshape conversations around regenerative medicine by exploring how biological signaling and topical technologies may expand access to therapies traditionally associated with injections and invasive procedures. It’s an approach grounded in both scientific curiosity and years of hands-on clinical experience.
“I’ve always believed innovation should solve real problems,” says Dr. Rhee. “The best ideas don’t come from trying to invent something new—they come from listening to patients and asking how we can help them recover better.”
That patient-first philosophy has been the common thread throughout his career.
Before becoming known for his work in regenerative medicine, Dr. Rhee built a career in high-performance healthcare. After graduating from chiropractic college, he worked alongside some of the country’s top athletes, including competitors from UCLA Athletics, before later serving as the official team chiropractor for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Working in elite sports quickly taught him that recovery isn’t simply about treating injuries—it’s about restoring function as safely and efficiently as possible.
“When you’re working with professional athletes, there isn’t much room for error,” he explains. “Every treatment decision has consequences because someone’s career may depend on it. That teaches you to focus on precision, evidence, and outcomes.”
His years in the U.S. Navy had already reinforced those same principles.
“My military experience taught me discipline and attention to detail,” he says. “Those lessons never leave you. Whether you’re flying an aircraft or caring for a patient, preparation matters.”
Although Dr. Rhee enjoyed success treating everyone from professional athletes to active families, he found himself increasingly asking whether recovery could become less invasive without sacrificing effectiveness.
“I kept seeing patients who wanted better options,” he says. “Some weren’t good candidates for procedures. Others simply wanted to avoid injections if there was another path available.”
Those questions eventually led him deeper into regenerative medicine.
Rather than focusing exclusively on traditional cell-based therapies, Dr. Rhee became interested in the role biological signaling plays in tissue recovery. Emerging research suggested that much of the body’s healing response is coordinated through complex communication pathways rather than the transplanted cells themselves.
That insight sparked years of research into topical regenerative technologies capable of supporting these signaling pathways through non-invasive delivery.
“The science is evolving rapidly,” says Dr. Rhee. “We’re learning that understanding how the body communicates during healing may be just as important as understanding the cells themselves.”
One of Dr. Rhee’s strongest beliefs is that meaningful medical innovation should ultimately become more accessible—not more exclusive.
Historically, many regenerative therapies have required specialized clinics, advanced procedures, and significant financial investment, placing them beyond the reach of many patients.
“I don’t think innovation reaches its full potential if only a small number of people can benefit from it,” he says. “Healthcare advances should eventually become practical enough for everyday clinical care.”
That philosophy has shaped the work being done at RheeGen®, where the focus remains on developing topical regenerative technologies designed around accessibility, scalability, and ease of use.
While research into biological activation and targeted signaling pathways continues to evolve, Dr. Rhee believes these approaches represent an exciting direction for the future of medicine.
“We’re moving toward therapies that work with the body’s own repair mechanisms,” he explains. “That’s a very different way of thinking about recovery.”
Dr. Rhee’s commitment to education extends well beyond patient care.
As the author of The Future of Regenerative Medicine, he set out to make an emerging scientific field more understandable to clinicians, healthcare professionals, and curious readers alike.
“I wanted to separate scientific progress from speculation,” he says. “There’s a lot of excitement around regenerative medicine, but there’s also a responsibility to explain what we know, what we’re still learning, and where the evidence is taking us.”
That same commitment has made him a sought-after speaker. Through conference presentations, media appearances, and his TEDx Talk, Dr. Rhee has become known for translating complex scientific concepts into conversations that audiences can actually follow.
“I think education builds trust,” he says. “When people understand the science, they’re better equipped to make informed decisions about their health.”
As regenerative medicine continues to evolve, Dr. Rhee believes healthcare is entering a period where biology, technology, and patient-centered design will increasingly intersect.
Future treatments, he predicts, will become less invasive, more personalized, and more focused on supporting the body’s natural healing systems rather than simply managing symptoms.
“We’re only beginning to understand what’s possible,” he says. “The future isn’t about replacing medicine—it’s about giving clinicians better tools and giving patients more options.”
Despite national recognition as an inventor, biotech founder, and thought leader, Dr. Rhee remains focused on the same mission that first inspired him to enter healthcare.
“At the end of the day, I’m still taking care of people,” he says. “Titles and recognition are wonderful, but what matters most is helping someone get back to doing the things they love.”
In an industry where technological advances often dominate headlines, Dr. Tommy Rhee offers a reminder that the most important innovations aren’t simply those that push science forward—they’re the ones that improve lives. As regenerative medicine continues to evolve, his work reflects a growing belief that the future of healing may be defined not only by breakthrough technologies, but by making those breakthroughs more accessible, practical, and patient-focused than ever before.
